Group Ask Ambode To Retract Eviction Notice To Waterfront Settlers
The Nigerian Slum and Informal Settlement
Federation, group which is the coalition of
waterfront settlers in Lagos State has demanded
the immediate retraction of the eviction notice
issued to waterfront settlers in the State by
Governor Akinwunmi Ambode. The seven days
eviction notice and plans of demolition of
waterfront structures was announced by LASG
on Sunday, October 9, 2016.
The group which comprises members from over
seventy informal settlements expressed shock
when the government issued the eviction notice
few days after it staged a peaceful protest on
Tuesday, October 4, 2016.
In a letter addressed to Governor Akinwunmi
Ambode which was obtained by InsdeMainland,
the group expressed its concern stressing that
the development “seems to be a continuation of
the anti-poor policies of Lagos State which we
protested last week.”
“We belong to the city and we have a right to
the city as well as a right to shelter and
livelihood. Forceful eviction is not only unlawful,
it is also ineffective. It will also not solve
whatever problem your administration hopes to
solve,” part of the letter reads.
Consequently, the group announced plans to
proceed on a mass protest if the government
does not officially retract the eviction notice by
the evening of today
